I have noticed that when handling a lot of data my Python scripts tend to be quicker than the ones I produce in R (might get back to this in a future post). Python is a general-purpose language whereas R is a statistical programming language. I use both Python and R python for creating Psychology experiments and R for data analysis. But also users of the other, more graphical interface (GUI) centred, software (e.g., STATA, SPSS) should also consider moving to open source software. R and Python are free and open source alternatives to, mainly, Matlab. Many researchers use software such as SPSS, STATA, Mplus, and Matlab for doing their analysis. That is, Rodeo and Spyder can both be seen as the RStudio for Python. Both Python IDEs might be useful for researchers used to work with R and RStudio (a very good and popular IDE for R) because they offer similar functionalities and graphical interfaces as RStudio.

We are changing our name to reflect what we are already doing. We are not changing our name because we are changing what we are doing. We believe the new brand identity better reflects our mission to become an open-source software company for data science, scientific research, and technical communication. Over the last few months, we have poured our hearts into creating a brand that would accurately depict who we are. Our CEO, JJ Allaire, wrote a blog post further outlining why now was the right time for RStudio to rebrand. We are excited to announce that we are rebranding RStudio, PBC as Posit, PBC in October! We chose Posit as the new name of the company because it is a real word describing what our customers do - They put forward ideas and critically analyze them.
